Edinburgh Trams v

The New Trams for Edinburgh

November 2011

Due to increasing costs of construction, in September 2011 the local council agreed that the first phase of the tram works would cover a line between the Airport and St Andrew Square. At this time TIE (Transport Initiatives Edinburgh) was disbanded and the Council have taken over direct control of the construction process using independent contractors.

The latest announcement for the expected operation of the Tram Line is now 2014, although test running is likely at the end of 2011. Power to the overhead lines within the Depot at Gogar is live and a mini test track section is nearing completion between the Gogar Depot and the bridge near to the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters.

2 trams are now stationed in the Depot, with the arrival of one from the manufactures, CAF,  in late October and the relocation of the intial tram from storage in West Lothian, which had previously been on display within the city in Princes Street.

The current program of work, Phase 1, basically covers what was originally planned for Line 2. Work is in progress to complete approximately 958 metres of single line and 13,629 metres of double line (excluding the depot).

The initial tram line will now run from the Airport to St Andrew Square (nr Picardy Place).

The stops will be  : -
